A plan, and why

A guide briefs in order: where, what, how, with what, until when. Tap a line to see what it rests on.

It's getting dark and the wind has dropped. Go to the steep south-east shore, where the depth comes close to land. The perch hunt shallow at dusk: a dark lure, slowly, high in the water.

Why?

South-east shore · 2–4 m, within a cast

  1. The south-east is the lake's steepest shore: the depth is within a cast of land.

    measured
  2. Big perch hunt shallow in the dark when the water is warm and still.

  3. Weak light in brownish water: the silhouette shows before the colour.

The lakes by our farm

The lakes in these pictures are in Halland, around Gudmundaredssjön. In 2012 they lay by the border of our small farm, where we kept sheep, cut firewood and ran two fishing shops, Jigg.se and Mormyska.se. I used to fish in those lakes. Now they are the lakes you see on fiske.guide, and when you fly in to the lake, the farm is there on the way.

Every water, rebuilt

You've been there before you go

Each lake is built from what has been measured: the ground metre by metre, the forest, the fields, the farms and the road there, in the light of the hour you pick. The houses stand where they stand, down to the summer cottage on the north-east shore and the path to the water.

The streams

Flowing the right way

Every stream follows its real course. This lake drains to the north; the streams in the north-east and the south run in. The inlets are where the fish hold when the water is cold.

The bottom

And the bottom, measured

Lay the depth on the water and the lake shows its shape: the contours, the deep hole, the steep south-east shore where the depth comes close to land. On lakes that have been sounded, the phone becomes a depth sounder, in the boat and on the ice.

Your guide

It becomes yours, one question at a time

The guide asks one thing when it matters, never a form, and the plan never waits for the answer. Call a point “the Stone”, and the next plan says “go to the Stone, the edge lies 30 m out from there”. Tell it what's in your tackle box, and it picks from your box first. Every trip, the ones without a bite too, makes the next advice sharper.

From the sofa to the shore

One trip, four moments

At home you build the trip; at the water you have it with you, even without coverage.

1At home

Pick the day and the hour, and see the lake as it will be then: the light, the wind on the water, the ice when it lies, and the plan for that moment.

2Fly there

Fly in along the road, past the outlet and the inlets, over the deep hole, and out to the shore where you'll stand.

3At the water

It knows which lake you're at, where the wind is, how warm the water is and what time of year the lake is in.

4Afterwards

How did it go? Fish, a bite or nothing: one tap, and the next plan is sharper.

“We're building the guide we always wanted ourselves.”
